The creator of OVO by Cirque du Soleil is Gringo Cardia, a Brazilian with a fantastic imagination. Beginning his career as a gymnast, Cardia skyrocketed into the world of set design for both video and performing arts. His signature design model is based on three principles: theatrical staging, architecture, and graphic design. He has worked as a producer in the opera, fashion, and theater industries and as a director in video and film. In 1994, the creator of OVO by Cirque du Soleil began an inspiring working relationship with the show's director, Deborah Colker, also from Brazil. Their teamwork bore the fruit of visual articulation never before seen on stage, which is the initiating energy of all the hype about OVO.

Born from the innovative brain of the creator of OVO by Cirque du Soleil, the show features a theme based on nature's biodiverse insect world. The set design of OVO, in combination with the costumes, are what bring the show alive. The creator, Gringo Cardia, supported his extraordinary vision by creating a set that enhances the look and movements of each character. The set design of OVO complements the OVO costumes beautifully and vice versa. Cardia's imagination, with plenty of insight from Colker, exemplifies the insect world and shows audiences that insect life is based on much more than meets the eye.

The environment is stylized and fascinating, creating a colorful depiction of a bug's habitat. As the creator of OVO, Cardia wanted his vision to flourish throughout the show. He designed an ever-changing set that transforms from forest to cave and interprets organic surroundings that could be many different spaces at once. The set and OVO costumes showcase the vivid and remarkable imaginations behind OVO. Cardia's desire was for the audiences nestled into the OVO Big Top to view the world through the bugs' eyes. Audiences members that talk about OVO speak highly of how commendable the interpretations are.

OVO costumes give substance to another world—one where insects aren't considered creepy or scary, but instead amiable and appealing. They are principled on evoking the insects rather than aping them. The magnificent OVO costumes were designed by Liz Vandal, who has always had a special fondness for the insect world. Upon hearing that OVO was going to focus on a world of insects, Liz Vandal knew her talent for costume design would be an ideal accompaniment to the show. Inspired by suits of armor from varying periods and post-modern super heroes, Vandal's OVO costumes incorporate graceful lines that enhance each insect's shape. The expanded length in the torsos of the costumes, aims for a lean, corseted look. Each part of the shells of the OVO costumes switch between soft and hard, channeling the image of Renaissance knights in armor. Lacy fabrics, stiffened materials, scores of patterns and colors, and permanent pleating all add to the visually stunning end result.

Underneath the OVO Big Top, lies the heart and soul of Gringo Cardia's vision. Called the Grand Chapiteau, the OVO Big Top houses the entrance tents, artistic tent, the box office, kitchen, warehouses, VIP tent, and more. The artistic tent alone is more than 120 square meters and houses distinct areas for the performers—dressing rooms, physiotherapy, wardrobe, training, and warm-up. A full week is required to set up the OVO Big top with two days of tear down when the show moves on. It is an ambitious feat that also includes carrying more than 2 million pounds of gear, including all the OVO costumes and sets, between cities. As determined as that sounds, that's what it takes for a successful performing act to hit the stage every night, move from city to city, and inspire audiences all over North America and the world.
